The golf season opened early in Finland this year – although availability has been patchy. We started on the 8th of March, then frozen off for a couple of weeks then back again.
Today as I write, Saturday 5th April at 8:30 the courses open at midday. Rounds before then have been cancelled and normally there is a 2 hours window from the end of freezing temperatures to play time. We are 2nd off.
I find the start of the season very difficult to judge the level of play. Since the winter of 2021 I’ve have been playing simulator golf so I’ve been able to keep my swing warm, and perhaps shore up my mental skills a bit – I kind of expect to hit the ground running.
Of course, smashing the ball of a mat does not replicate real life lies on the golf course, so I would expect certain aspects to take time to warm up: especially chipping.

Seaside was the first course to open. Not my favourite but I did manage to play to my handicap on it, so maybe a have slew a few demons already.
Course management was a big determiner of the scores so far. I have been very guilty of some very bad decisions, chasing score occasionally but the for the most part – very poor execution so shots has been the biggest factor to my scoring.
My winter season this year has been about the same as previous years with my scoring average around the same as the previous year.

Scoring tends to be around 4 shots better inside compared to on the course – my handicap peaked at scratch for the first time. Still a dream to get #scratchBySixty in real life – let’s see how that goes. The main aim is still just to have fun.
Have you got any goals this year on the #golf course?
The sun is shining – the probability of playing today looks quite good. It’s going to be cold and is really windy – but it’s exercise, with friends, outdoors. What more could you ask for?
